After an encouraging first two decades of the 21st Century that had provided a fertile environment to support the growth of air travel, nobody was prepared for the rollercoaster ride that the initial years of the 2020s have offered. As sentiment to travel rises, the industry is growing again.Global domestic air capacity is already nearing prepandemic levels and international air travel is following behind as travel restrictions have been slowly lifted. The CAPA Airline Leader Summit series makes an exciting return to in person events in 2022 with the ‘Airlines in Transition’ event held on 7-8 April and hosted by MAG in Manchester. Following months of suppressed capacity due to the COVID-19 pandemic, following a successful vaccine rollout throughout 2021, there has been a sustained rebound in the UK, even after the expected summer season peak.
With the reopening of trans Atlantic travel, the UK's capacity is expected to rebound further towards the winter season.
Of the UK's 862 aircraft fleet 139 are currently inactive, many of which are widebody aircraft, however as more international markets reopen there are expected to return to service.
This week British Airways reactivated its Airbus A380 fleet, performing European proofing flights in anticipation of deploying them on long haul routes in the coming months.

France has experienced a significant rebound in capacity, with recent data showing a further increase into the winter season. Owing to a successful vaccine rollout, France’s aviation sector is reaping the benefits of increased passenger confidence.
Of France’s 480 aircraft within its fleet, only 47 are inactive - one of the most impressive 'in service' to 'inactive' ratios of any European country.
The opening of the 'United States’ borders have enabled trans Atlantic travel for the first time in over 600 days, and Air France wasted no time in ramping up operations between the two countries. France’s airlines have a significant backlog of aircraft due for delivery in the coming years, with Air France alone having 86 on order.

Greece’s aviation market is one of the first in Europe to return to 100% capacity.
In late Aug-2021 the country’s capacity achieved the 100% capacity of 2019 levels and has retained that level well into Nov-2021.
With usual levels of capacity relatively low for the country, it is expected that this impressive rebound will be sustained through to summer 2022. Unlike many other Mediterranean countries, Greece has shown impressive early success in the recovery and has the potential to achieve beyond 100% of 2019 in the summer of 2022.

Malaysia’s capacity is on the upwards trajectory, albeit a gradual one. From record lows seen throughout 2021, the aviation industry in the country is beginning the slow recovery.
Half the country’s aircraft fleet remains inactive, however with a backlog of nearly 500, the majority of which are to AirAsia, the recovery is expected to be quicker once regional LCC travel resumes.
Malaysia’s aircraft delivery schedule is impressive, with nearly 30 aircraft being delivered every year until at least 2035.

Thailand is one of many Asian countries still grappling with the pandemic’s effects.
With weekly capacity even below 2020 levels, more than half of the country’s fleet remains inactive. However, on the 27th September 2021 the Thai government approved a four-phase timeline for the country’s tourism reopening.
Following a pilot phase on the island of Phuket, the roll-out will then be extended to Bangkok and a number of mainland and island tourist destinations. The final phase will see much of the country’s tourist destinations open to travellers.
Thailand is one of the key examples of how strict measures to curb COVID-19 have impacted aviation and the tourism industry. With the country opening up in the coming months, it will be interesting to see if it has any immediate impact on those industries.
