Airline Sustainability Benchmarking Report 2021 - Business Travel Edition

The CAPA-Envest Airline Sustainability Benchmarking Report 2021 is the first industry single source of truth on emissions, benchmarking airlines and their performance

Corporate travel procurement increasingly will be decided not just on traditional metrics, including price, airline network, schedule, flexibility, and loyalty rewards, but also on the stated sustainability strategies of airlines and the demonstrated outcomes of decarbonisation commitments.

To ensure that a company’s sustainability objectives are also supported by the actions of travel suppliers including airlines, it is critical that corporate procurement divisions have access to meaningful and detailed performance data from airlines to demonstrate not only the existence of sustainability strategies, but also demonstrated actions and
evidence of outcomes.

This report, jointly prepared by CAPA - Centre for Aviation (CAPA) and Envest Global (Envest), is designed to highlight some of the core elements of sustainable aviation, methods of quantifying individual airline sustainability credentials, and carbon emissions by journey, to assist corporations in identifying the travel suppliers most closely aligned to their own sustainability ambitions.

Key facts about the Report

  • 50 page report
  • Benchmarking of 52 airlines and their reported emissions for 2019 and 2020
  • 8 Figures/graphics and analysis showing the most important airline comparisons for pre-COVID 2019.
  • Insights into global corporations’ decarbonisation strategies and implications for corporate travel reduction

Why Travel Managers need this report, the data is contains and what you can do with it

  • Provides relevant and credible reporting metrics to support traveller’s/ corporates’ own emission targets/objectives

The six megatrends shaping the aviation industry in 2022

After an encouraging first two decades of the 21st Century that had provided a fertile environment to support the growth of air travel, nobody was prepared for the rollercoaster ride that the initial years of the 2020s have offered. It was the proverbial calm before the storm. But this was not like any storm encountered previously. As the coronavirus crisis evolved from a small news story into a global pandemic, air travel came to a near standstill. The calm climb of the previous decades came to an immediate stop and an industry collapsed into freefall. This was a vertical drop. And it didn’t stop, wiping years of growth in a matter of days.

It suddenly became all about survival. Costs were quickly jettisoned as businesses restructured in preparation for recovery. That path has become complicated by a mutating virus and cautious governments, but an increasingly vaccinated population and strong pent-up demand is already delivering pockets of growth in many geographic markets.

As sentiment to travel rises, the industry is growing again.Global domestic air capacity is already nearing prepandemic levels and international air travel is following behind as travel restrictions have been slowly lifted. But just as some confidence is starting to return, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the rising cost of fuel are just two of the key factors that will impact a recovery path that will also be influenced by technological developments and sustainability considerations.

The CAPA Airline Leader Summit series makes an exciting return to in person events in 2022 with the ‘Airlines in Transition’ event held on 7-8 April and hosted by MAG in Manchester. Airlines in Transition will bring together thought leaders from aviation and the wider travel industry, including airline executives, key suppliers, technology partners and regulators.

The focus for the summit is the aviation megatrends which have emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. Global airline leaders will share their insights and perspectives on the changes brought about in the aviation sector over the past two years. They will also share their expectations about the shape of the recovery and thinking on how the pandemic has changed the broader trajectory for aviation and the travel sector.

  • Analysis on the most important airline comparisons for the year pre-COVID, 2019;
  • Insights into global corporations’ decarbonisation strategies and implications for corporate travel; and
  • Perspectives on investor demands for the airline industry and how these will continue to lead to increased pressure on airline boards and senior management.

France CAPA Aviation Country Report Nov-2021

France has experienced a significant rebound in capacity, with recent data showing a further increase into the winter season. Owing to a successful vaccine rollout, France’s aviation sector is reaping the benefits of increased passenger confidence.

Of France’s 480 aircraft within its fleet, only 47 are inactive - one of the most impressive 'in service' to 'inactive' ratios of any European country.

The opening of the 'United States’ borders have enabled trans Atlantic travel for the first time in over 600 days, and Air France wasted no time in ramping up operations between the two countries. France’s airlines have a significant backlog of aircraft due for delivery in the coming years, with Air France alone having 86 on order.

Greece CAPA Aviation Country Report Nov-2021

Greece’s aviation market is one of the first in Europe to return to 100% capacity.

In late Aug-2021 the country’s capacity achieved the 100% capacity of 2019 levels and has retained that level well into Nov-2021.

With usual levels of capacity relatively low for the country, it is expected that this impressive rebound will be sustained through to summer 2022. Unlike many other Mediterranean countries, Greece has shown impressive early success in the recovery and has the potential to achieve beyond 100% of 2019 in the summer of 2022.

Malaysia CAPA Aviation Country Report Oct-2021

Malaysia’s capacity is on the upwards trajectory, albeit a gradual one. From record lows seen throughout 2021, the aviation industry in the country is beginning the slow recovery.

Half the country’s aircraft fleet remains inactive, however with a backlog of nearly 500, the majority of which are to AirAsia, the recovery is expected to be quicker once regional LCC travel resumes.

Malaysia’s aircraft delivery schedule is impressive, with nearly 30 aircraft being delivered every year until at least 2035.

Thailand CAPA Aviation Country Report Oct-2021

Thailand is one of many Asian countries still grappling with the pandemic’s effects.

With weekly capacity even below 2020 levels, more than half of the country’s fleet remains inactive. However, on the 27th September 2021 the Thai government approved a four-phase timeline for the country’s tourism reopening.

Following a pilot phase on the island of Phuket, the roll-out will then be extended to Bangkok and a number of mainland and island tourist destinations. The final phase will see much of the country’s tourist destinations open to travellers.

Thailand is one of the key examples of how strict measures to curb COVID-19 have impacted aviation and the tourism industry. With the country opening up in the coming months, it will be interesting to see if it has any immediate impact on those industries.
